5 Tips to keep your lips soft and smooth in winter

No one wants dry, chapped lips. At best, they’re annoying. At worst, they make your life miserable. But aside from that, they’re just not a good look. There are a variety of reasons why you might find yourself with dry lips – from winter weather to medication. Plus, lips are more sensitive than the rest of your body. Unlike other parts of the skin, lips don’t contain oil glands, meaning they don’t retain moisture very well and are more susceptible to drying out. Another factor is that your lips don’t have much of an outer layer and so are less protected from the elements. Whatever the reason, we’re all likely to experience dry lips at some point in our lives. But suffering with dry, chapped lips each winter isn’t something you have to put up with. There are steps you can take to reduce the dryness and avoid the chap.

These three tips will keep your lips soft and smooth in winter and all year round.

1.  Make time to exfoliate

We all know about exfoliation. Exfoliator gloves for your body. Exfoliating brushes for your face. Chances are, exfoliation is already part of your weekly beauty routine, but does that include exfoliating your lips, as well? Gentle exfoliation can do wonders for your lips – especially during the winter months when they are especially dry and sore. Exfoliating helps banish the dead skin cells from the surface of the lips and restore some of the smoothness and shine. Use a lip scrub (or an unused toothbrush) to buff away any dead skin, being careful not to scrub too hard. And never over-exfoliate. Start by exfoliating your lips once a week to avoid irritation, and then gradually build up to twice a week.

2. Apply a nourishing lip balm

Fact: Not all lip balms are created equal. If anything, some could end up drying or irritating your lips even more. Some people fall into the trap of believing that the tingling sensation they experience after applying certain lip balms shows the product is working. That’s not the case. More likely, it means a product contains ingredients that irritate the lips. Instead, look for a vitamin-enriched balm that’s full of hydrating ingredients, such as ceramides and fatty acids.Research has shown that these help moisture retention and restoration. A good place to start is with Code8’s AM/PM Tinted Lip Balm. It contains a blend of vitamins (A and E) to help prevent early signs of ageing and stimulate collagen production. Plus vitamin F to repair and regenerate the skin, and act as an emollient. AM/PM tinted balms are also packed with castor seed oil and ceramides to retain moisture and keep lips hydrated. During the winter months, apply your lip balm several times during the day – every couple of hours when you are outside. And use a thicker ointment (such as petroleum jelly) before you go to bed to lock in moisture overnight.

3. Stay hydrated

Your body needs a lot of water and when you don’t give it enough, it lets you know. Headaches, dull skin, fatigue, weight gain, and yes, you’ve guessed it, chapped lips are all signs you need to up your water intake. It’s recommended we drink between eight and 10 glasses of water every day. Unfortunately, the majority of us fall short of that. Sometimes, by quite a wide margin. We’re not talking about eight to 10 glasses of fluid (tea, coffee, fizzy drinks, and alcohol don’t count). It needs to be glasses of H2O. If you’re struggling to drink enough water try to incorporate it into your routine. For example: start each day with a glass of water; drink a glass before each meal; take a reusable water bottle when you leave the house; or add a small amount of sugar-free cordial to your water.
