Behind Our New Campaign With Mary Greenwell
"I didn’t know make-up existed until I was 23. Now it’s my life”, make-up artist Mary Greenwell has been known to say. And what a life it has been. The beauty tour de force, who is one of the world’s most sought-after make-up artists, and with whom we have shot our new spring/summer campaign, Mary has worked with literally everyone. With a career spanning over 30 years, Mary’s influence over the fashion and beauty industries is unrivalled She has created new beauty trends on the runway, won numerous awards, and her handiwork has graced the most iconic covers, runways and red carpets.
Mary’s entry into make-up started by chance when she moved from the UK to LA and worked for the brand Il Makiage. Ilana Harkavi, the owner of Il Makiage and a widely respected make-up artist herself, soon noticed Mary’s talent and took her under her wing. In the mid-80s, Mary moved to Paris where she began working with all of the esteemed photographers of the time, including Patrick Demarchelier, Paolo Roversi and Peter Lindbergh, dividing her time between all the fashion capitals. She also spent a lot of time in Japan while collaborating with celebrated avant-garde designer Yohji Yamamoto.
Her work has graced the covers of every fashion publication you can think of, from many-a-Vogue and Elle, to Glamour and Harper’s Bazaar. Mary has also helped to create some of the most defining covers of the last thirty years, working with phenomenal faces including the original supers - Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Stephanie Seymour, Cindy Crawford, and Naomi Campbell, to name just a few. At American Vogue, Mary worked directly with famed stylist Grace Coddington, and together they created that iconic April 1992 Vogue 100th anniversary cover which featured all the 90s supermodels.
But her reach went beyond fashion: a pivotal moment in Mary’s career was when she was introduced to Diana Princess of Wales. Mary helped to re-define Princess Diana’s image and worked on some of her most remembered photo shoots. She has since continued to be the must-have make-up artist for celebrities such as Cate Blanchett, Jessica Chastain, Amanda Seyfried, Uma Thurman, Lily Collins, Felicity Jones and Gemma Arterton.
All this considered, you can imagine our excitement about working with Mary. She not only shares the natural-looking makeup philosophy that we uphold at Code8, but her life’s work has been all about enhancing women’s beauty, and making them feel beautiful at any age.
For our new Spring/Summer ‘19 campaign, Mary worked together with Code8 Creative Director Sophia Chikovani, to create three warm-weather looks within our signature range - from natural, to polished, to dramatic. We worked with striking South African model Gerda Marie Mare, herself being 38-years-old, to champion age diversity and bring out the self-assured attitude that comes with a confident, bold and sophisticated Code8 woman.
A picture speaks a thousand words, and these confirm, that there’s something about Mary.
