Code8's Self-Made Stories | Andrea Cheong
To begin with, could you share with us a little about yourself?
I'm Andrea, a London based creator (photography and illustration) and journalist. Most importantly, I'm a mum to a Labrador, bunny and lots of happy plants. I started blogging in 2011 and since then, it's turned into an online magazine with a team of contributors. I also run a content consultancy for luxury brands that want to connect with their audiences on social media.
How did you get where you are today, and who/what helped you along the way?
Sometimes I think it's a series of happy accidents with a lot of hard work. But in reality, I know when I'm on the right path when I find that the people around me are positive and encouraging. If you look around and find that you're not - change something and do it fast. My old food editor and editor in chief at Time Out gave me a huge break back in 2016 and since then, I think everyone I've met has definitely been for a reason - good or bad.
We love that you champion sustainable fashion brands, which is your favourite and why?
Thank you! I champion brands that are listening to the consumer. In 2020 this means sustainable practices. However, I would never claim to be a sustainable person as that term is so loaded. For me, it's about mindful, conscious consumption, especially in an industry proliferated with poor quality and hyped marketing. No brand can ever get it 100% right and with this cancel culture, I'm wary about saying I have a favourite. I have a Mindful Monday series on TheHauteHeel.com where I interview brands that are leading the way. Recently we spoke to a very young, female-led, cultured diamond company and this is shaping the future of gem mining.
Who’s the most inspiring person you’ve met and why?
What’s been your favourite brand collaboration so far and why?
In the past, I would've loved to humble brag about a really big luxury brand. However, my favourite would be the most meaningful, which was drawing dogs for charity. It was with Portrait Pals in December and they raise funds for All Dogs Matter, which is where I fostered a lurcher. It was a personal project but posting about it helped the cause a little.
What advice would you give your past self knowing what you know today?
Lastly, favourite Code8 product and why?
I adore the lipsticks, firstly the Colour ID Lab is just amazing and highly personal. Secondly, the Glazé Lip Lacquer range are unlike anything I've ever tried. I always get compliments on the red one.
