Everything you need to know about beauty balms

BB creams are loved by makeup artists and beauty fans alike, but what exactly are they? And how do you use them? This guide will teach you everything you need to know about the multifunctional product that are beauty balms, including when to use them, how to apply them, and why everyone should have one in their collection. Plus, we’ll be sharing our favourite BB cream with you.

What is BB cream?

Before we get into what its used for, we first wanted to touch on what BB cream is. A BB cream offers more coverage and skincare benefits than a tinted moisturiser, but is not as opaque as a foundation. ‘BB’ stands for Beauty Balm or Blemish Balm, and the product gets its name because it can quickly beautify your appearance without the need for makeup. BB creams originated in South Korea, and after making their way onto the Western skincare scene they quickly became bestsellers among beauty fans that wanted to instantly hydrate, illuminate and protect their complexion.

Ingredients to look for in BB creams

If you’re searching for a hydrating BB cream formula, opt for products that contain natural moisturisers like Argan Seed Oil, Hyaluronic Acid and Glycerine. Other great ingredients to look out for are SPF and antioxidants like Vitamin C and Niacinamide. These will help to prevent the signs of ageing and control any environmental and sun damage that could potentially harm your skin.

What is BB cream used for?

BB cream is used for smoothing pores and imprefections and providing a lightweight base, they can be worn with or without additional makeup dependant on your preferences. The perfect time to use a BB cream is in the morning straight after your cleansing routine, as it will help to blur imperfections but still look incredibly natural. Many also choose to use beauty balms in place of foundation when they are going to the gym or plan on being outside a lot, as they’re sheer and feel more comfortable on the skin. BB creams are also great for travelling, wearing on flights and taking to festivals, because they don’t require brushes to apply, they don’t feel as heavy on your skin as foundation and are much easier to remove.

How to find your perfect BB cream shade

As BB cream is so lightweight and sheer, you should aim for a shade as close to your natural skin tone as possible. Work out your natural undertones first, and this will make the process much easier. If your neck is much lighter than your face or chest, choose a shade in between the two. This way, everything will look like it blends together seamlessly. Complexions with strong freckles usually have a lighter base colour, so they should choose a colour one shade darker than their natural complexion. Opting for a shade that’s too light can make freckles appear ashy.

How to apply BB cream

BB cream should be applied all over the face using your fingertips, a brush or a wet sponge. Start with a pea-sized amount and blend from the centre of the face outwards, using more product if and when it’s necessary. The formula should sink into your skin quickly and absorb almost instantly. To ensure your beauty balm lasts all day, take some translucent powder and a large fluffy brush and lightly dust your face to set the look.

The best BB cream

There are so many BB creams on the market, it can be hard to choose, but we recommend the Code8 Radiate Beauty Balm. It won a Beauty Bible Award in 2020, thanks to its revolutionary Knead Technology formula that illuminates, perfects and protects and is infused with Pectin, Argan Seed Oil and SPF 15. It’s easy to spread and blends seamlessly into the skin for a natural level of coverage and a velvety soft finish. Perfect for days when you want to look like the best version of you.
