Beauty Ingredients Explained

When it comes to makeup ingredients, we’re often bombarded with marketing jargon and unpronounceable, scientific sounding ingredients and product names. When you think of some of these ingredients, you might already have a preconceived idea of whether they are considered 'good-for-skin' or 'icky'. However, do you actually know? Below, we’ve compiled a list of ten common ingredients found in beauty products to give an overview of what they are what benefits they add to your favourite products.

1.Argan Oil

What is it?

Argan oil comes from Morrocan argan trees' kernels.

What are the benefits?

Argan oil is comprised of fatty acids and is a rich source of Vitamin E. It has moisturising, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties—which can help maintain healthy skin and prevent the signs of ageing.

2.Butylene Glycol

What is it?

Butylene glycol is organic alcohol derived from petroleum. It's a humectant (to hydrate the skin by attracting water), solvent (to dissolve certain ingredients to enhance its functionality), and emollient (to soothe and soften skin).

What are the benefits?

As a humectant, it attracts water and pulls in hydration to the skin. As an emollient, it seals in the moisture by creating a barrier. It also improves product penetration—which makes the other active ingredients work more effectively as they can reach deeper into the layers of the skin.

3.Castor Oil

What is it?

Castor oil comes from pressed castor seeds—it has a thick texture and is enriched with Vitamin E and fatty acids.

What are the benefits?

It's a humectant that provides a hydrating effect and helps prevent trans epidermal water loss. Castor oil's main fatty acid, ricinoleic acid, has anti-inflammatory properties, which reduce breakouts and redness. It’s great for keeping signs of inflammation at bay.

Caprylyl glycol is an alcohol that’s derived from caprylic acid and is usually found naturally in palm and coconut oils. It’s also used as a preservative in many beauty products.

What are the benefits?

Caprylyl glycol is a multifunctional cosmetic ingredient. It's used to enhance the product's spreadability and is known for its preservative and anti-microbial properties. It’s also a humectant that helps attract moisture to the skin and retain hydration.

What is it?

Dimethicone is a synthetic polymer of silicon (a form of silicone) and an emollient (helps soothe and soften skin by sealing in moisture).

What are the benefits?

Dimethicone is used to improve the feel, longevity, and efficacy of the other ingredients. It gives a long-lasting hydration effect without clogging pores. Plus, it provides a lightweight, silky smooth finish and non-greasy feel that spreads quickly and easily. It also forms a barrier on the skin to seal in hydration and protect from irritants.
