Chelsea in Bloom For The ‘19 Chelsea Flower Show

Held from May 21 to 28 this year, the Chelsea Flower Show is the fashion week of horticulture. It has all the fanfare, pomp and pretty ladies, but the subject isn’t sartorial. It’s gardens.Held on the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, London, every year since 1913, apart from gaps during the two World Wars, it’s both one of Britain's largest flower show and definitely the most prestigious.

This year, there were 28 gardens this year divided by clear categories, 11 Show Gardens (the best of garden design, wow-factor, usually the main attraction), 6 Artisan Gardens (more rustic finishes, using traditional materials and methods), 9 ‘Space to Grow’ Gardens (to grow fruits and vegetables) and 2 Feature Gardens (cutting-edge).The best part is the inspiration: companies walk away with ideas for brand building, and the public for their own gardens. Much like fashion week, there were trends. This year they included a heavy use of stark green over having many colours, copper touches, statement logs, and sustainable projects. In fact, the Royal Horticultural Society encourages exhibitors to ensure that their gardens have a life after the show for others to enjoy them. This can happen in various forms – gardens may be relocated in their entirety or broken down and used for a number of different projects.

But it’s not only about the Flower Show itself. Much of southwest London (and luckily for us, near Code8’s HQ) reaps the aesthetic benefit. The aptly named Chelsea in Bloom 2019 has had flowers transform shops and cafes in and around Chelsea and Belgravia in particular.

This year's theme, Under The Sea, saw shops, restaurants and street corners transformed into beautiful eye-catching sea creatures made from plants and flowers. This was, of course, especially on-brand for Polpo (that’s ‘octopus’ in Italian if unawares) in the Duke of York Square.
