Lessons from Mum: A Conversation with Code8 Co-Founder Nadine Ayache

One way or another, our mothers play a central role in our lives. They influence, teach and inspire us- and better yet, pass down all generations of family recipes to try our hands at in the kitchen. In short, our mothers have given us all the tools we need to succeed in life.

For Mother’s Day, we caught up with our founders, Nadine Ayache and Sophia Chikovani and asked them a few questions about their mothers, from all of the important lessons their mothers taught them to the best beauty tips they’ve picked up from them over time. Below, Nadine shares her thoughts.

What's the most important lesson your mother has taught you?

Having discipline is one of the most important lessons my mother taught me at an early age. She always leads by example by being disciplined, both with life, work and her role as being my mother. She runs a tight ship!

Describe your mother using with one word.

The best way to describe my mother is with the word empathetic. She is a loving, nourishing and caring mother, but her ability to show empathy towards her family, friends and even random strangers is truly special and extraordinary. My mother is a very emotionally intelligent and a truly strong woman, something I have always admired her for.

What are the best beauty tips that you’ve learned from your mum?

She always encouraged me to experiment with makeup products and create different makeup looks and styles. Knowing what beauty techniques and colours work specifically for your features can only be achieved by experimenting with beauty products, this is something my mother encouraged me to do. Among friends and family, my mother is known for wearing punchy and bold colours. Funnily enough, I have also been inspired by this my entire life, I love wearing bold colours!

Another significant piece of advice she gave me- and my sister- is the importance of good beauty hygiene. She was especially strict about this during my teenage years, where you tend to be a bit distracted in life. My mother made sure I always took off my makeup at the end of the day, followed by a suitable night cream. The beauty advice she gave me during my teenage years has followed me throughout my adult life. Still today, I can’t remember the last time I slept with makeup on. No matter how tired I am, I always take off my makeup followed by my skincare routine.

If your mother becomes world-famous, what will it be for?

My mother makes the best chilis! One day, if she decides to become an entrepreneur, she definitely has what it takes to become successful with a delicious chili recipe and her discipline! She could also become a world-renowned lawyer if she had had the chance to finish school when she was younger. My mother has the qualities to become a great lawyer: great communication, people skills, and she can rapidly draw logical and analytical conclusions, as well as argue for things she believes in. There is still time for either, you never know!
