The biggest makeup trends for 2022

January 14, 2022

2021 brought us a host of fabulous makeup trends. There was noughties nostalgia with frosted eyeshadow, high definition eyes (the only thing visible above a face mask) and a shift towards ‘skinimilism’ as part of our ongoing quest for healthy, glowing skin. These trends brought us joy and an escape from the world around us. Turns out there’s more to beauty industry trends than some people think. What we look for in our makeup and beauty products reflect the things we cherish and aspire to day-to-day. The pared-back, natural look illustrates our obsession with wellness as a result of the pandemic. Our trip down memory lane reflects our yearning for simpler times. Moving into 2022, we will see a shift towards more experimental makeup, perhaps highlighting our desire for more radical change…

Here are Code8’s predictions for the biggest makeup trends to expect over the coming months.

1. Natural, dewy, glowing skin

We wanted glowing skin in 2021, and we want it even more this year. The term ‘skinimilism’ – coined by the beauty experts at Pinterest – will continue in 2022 promising us dewy skin with minimal fuss. This stripped-back approach to skincare is better for your skin (skin that’s overloaded with too many products can be prone to breakouts, dehydration and sensitivity) and better for the environment, too (fewer products equals less waste). Your route to glowing skin comes in four simple steps each morning: cleanser, vitamin C-enriched serum, moisturiser and foundation or BB cream with SPF for added protection. For a lightweight, light coverage BB cream, look no further thanCode8’s Radiate Beauty Balm. With pectin to moisturise and nourish and SPF 15 to help prevent the signs of ageing, it creates complete definition and a wonderfully smooth, radiant finish. We’re talking about second-skin freshness and a wonderfully natural glow.

2.  Statement eyes

Another trend we’ll see rolling over from 2021 into 2022 is creative, bold eye makeup. Skincare might be all about minimalism, but when it comes to the eye, maximalism is key. Graphic eyeliner will be joined by graphic eyeshadow. Give it a go using a soft pencil such asCode8’s Contour Eye Pencil to outline the shape and fill it with your eyeshadow of choice. Another must-have for 2022 from the Code8 range is theIconoclast Eyeshadow Palette. With six shades in each you can start experimenting to create your own version of statement eyes. Velvet Chrome will create a sophisticated, high-impact look with its modern matte and shimmering cool shades of blues, purples, and more earthy hues. Or why not try Jaipur Marbles? Full of jewel-like shades of gold, deep pink, green and grey that awaken the face and create a contemporary, sophisticated look. These palettes will take you from day to night with their pigmented, shimmery, long-lasting colour. Complete the look with a lengthening mascara to create lash definition and volume.Code8’s Lash Sophisticate High Definition Mascara is buildable, long-lasting and will intensify the gaze. Apply one coat to separate and define lashes for a natural look or apply multiple coats for a more volumising effect and a deep, rich colour pay-off. What’s more, this mascara comes in a glass container, helping you reduce your plastic footprint one swipe of the applicator wand at a time.

3. Fireside flush – natural rosiness

Blusher is making a much anticipated comeback in 2022. Statement blusher is definitely a thing this year – there really is no such thing as too much. But you don’t have to create a clown-esque appearance to be on trend. A fireside flush paired with glowing skin is this year’s answer to contouring. And with the right products and bit of know-how, you can have dewy, natural-looking cheeks that mimic your skin’s natural flush. Once you have your base layer in place (foundation and primer to help your blusher stay put for longer), you’ll want a mid-sized fluffy brush. Apply a powder blusher – likeCode8’s Blush Palette – starting at the apples of the cheeks and working upwards to the cheekbone. Keep the colour high on your cheekbones, blending in upward strokes to lift the colour and create a softer, more natural look.

And if you’re after a sun-kissed glow without the sun, why not add a few fake freckles for an even more youthful, natural vibe?

4. Overstated eyeliner

Eyeliner might be just one product, but it can achieve a host of striking looks. From the classic cat eye to a sexy smudge, it’s one of the most versatile products out there. But more often than not we stick to the same style of eyeliner application. Could 2022 be the year you shake things up and get a bit more creative? There are plenty of trending styles to choose from. Graphic eyeliner will remain popular (Code8’s Precision Liquid Eyeliner will keep your look super sharp), with lots more trends coming your way. A vibrant flash of colour along your top lid can be a makeup look all on its own. If you’re looking for a more subtle look, try applying a dab of colour to the outer edges of your eye. Or what about the reverse cat eye? A TikTok favourite, this swipe of smokey, winged eyeliner along the bottom lash line can be achieved using an ultra-soft kajal eye pencil likeCode8’s Eye Contour Pencil followed by a smokey dab of matte black eyeshadow. The darkest shade in theLuxury Iconoclast Eyeshadow Palette, Lustrous Corduroy, is one of our favourites.

5. Crimson lips

The bold lip has been around for a while and it’s not going away anytime soon. While not strictly a new trend, in 2022 there will be one change: when we wear those bold lips. Forget saving crimson lipstick for a big night out, this year we’ll be swiping bright reds for work meetings, doing the school run or popping to the shops. Get the look withCode8’s Matte Velour Lipstick in Opera – a Hollywood-style red that instantly upgrades your look when you’ve got errands to run.
